The Cultural heritage department contributes to the implementation of relevant legislation and pursues a policy of support and public awareness in the areas of architectural, archaeological, industrial, feudal, natural, intangible, and movable heritage. The department is also responsible for managing protected areas and working in partnership with the entities in charge of these sites. In addition, it defines and develops the digital strategy for the national cultural heritage, in collaboration with the institutes and services responsible for its preservation, dissemination, and promotion — including libraries, archives, and museums.

Service for heritage management and public awareness
This service is made up of five separate units: architectural heritage, Steichen heritage, archaeological heritage, intangible heritage, natural heritage and movable heritage. The missions of these units are similar, although they refer to different areas of cultural heritage.
The mission of these services is to advise the Minister responsible for culture—together with the State cultural institutes—on matters within their respective fields, to develop and assess the Ministry’s actions in these areas, and to manage its relations with sector stakeholders such as municipalities and non-profit organizations.
The units are also responsible for the application of legislation and the development and implementation of awareness-raising strategies in the field of cultural heritage. They participate in the updating or drafting of legislative texts and represent the ministry in various committees, commissions, working groups and boards.
Finally, the various units coordinate general activities and provide administrative management for the sector concerned and monitor the agreements concluded by the State with the stakeholders in their field.
